Finding formal dinnerware can be both fun or it can be incredibly frustrating if you can't find something that you really love. After all, who wants to spend hundreds (or thousands) of dollars for something that doesn't spark satisfaction and pleasure every time you look at it. Recently, I was shopping for something fresh and new to use for special occasions, or whenever the desire hits me. That led me to search for the best blue and white fine China sets and I'm going to share my top picks with you.
I chose my favorites based on several factors. The first factor I took into account were the ratings. If they didn't have a better than average rating, they simply did not make the cut. There were one or two designs that I really liked but they missed my rating by a half a star or more so I left them off the list.
My second criteria was the perceived "specialness" of the design. Although any of them could be used daily if desired, I wanted them to be different enough so as not to seem like an "every day" use item. And of course they had to be gorgeous with vibrant colors and an eye catching pattern.
Next I looked at the price. I wasn't looking for the least expensive designs, nor was I looking for the more expensive ones either (Hello! $700 per place setting!? Not today).
I also considered whether or not there were additional accessories available like serving bowls or butter dishes because when I really like a pattern I tend to want to have every piece that's available. All of my top picks do have at least one additional accessory beyond the 5-piece setting.
Finally, I looked at what I like to call TDAA (that stands for Teenage Daughter Aesthetics Approval ). You may, or may not, be delighted to learn that my daughter who has a great eye for both quality and beauty, has given her (very hard to earn) approval on all of these choices. Huzzah!
I picked this because the brilliant color really makes these plates stand out. Add to that the 22k gold highlights and the beautiful Hibiscus flowers, and this is a design that anyone would be proud to own and share during holidays and special occasions. The attention to detail can be clearly observed in the ease in which the circular and flower patterns come together into one united design.
These are absolutely divine and that's why they made it unto my favorites list. Sky colored with royal highlights and a a gorgeous peacock feather design, these are for you if you're going for the "wow" factor. This is a incredibly elegant five-piece setting that is perfect for putting on display long after the holidays are over.
I love this particular design because it is a very stately and sophisticated pattern. There is a boldness to the design that speaks of power and strength. I love the gold accents and the depth of the color. In addition to the traditional five-piece place setting, there is an abundance of matching pieces available on the same page as this one, which is a bonus in my opinion.
This formal set is delicately pretty. The combination of cobalt blue against the white background and the 24k gold leaf accents is a lovely, elegant combination. You could easily use this for both formal and more casual gatherings. There are several additional pieces available such as serving a serving bowl and an oval platter that could be added to your collection. I chose this because I love the design. It has a vintage feel to it and there is something about this pattern that is very cheerful and uplifting while still maintaining a level of polish and refinement.
The scrolled detail on these is very ornate and distinct. I love that they make a bold statement and yet they are still executed tastefully. I also love the way the gold and platinum accents were used to enhance the look. If you're a fan of dramatic yet elegant formal ware, then this is a great choice. As an a side, there are not quite as many additional accessories for this but you can find salad/soup bowls and and a sauce boat and platter to add to it.
